National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

On January 4th, 2010, President Obama signed a proclamation that declared January to be National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month and January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

On Monday, I will be in Olympia attending Washington state’s Human Trafficking Engagement Day.

There are currently 27 million enslaved/trafficked (I use both terms interchangeably) people in the world today, and that number is quickly growing. That is more than in all of human history combined. Millions of your neighbors  are being exploited for sex and labor all around the world. In my own backyard of the Pacific Northwest, thousands of women have been trafficked into prostitution. An estimated 800 brothels are expected to spring up for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

A decade into the 21st century, it is completely unacceptable that SLAVERY still exists in this world. When I get back on Monday, I will make a more detailed post about human trafficking and how you can help in the anti-trafficking movement, but if anyone ever wants to know more, never hesitate to contact me. No matter what I am doing, I will always have the time to educate you on this horrendous atrocity.
